Abstract:

"Zolotuhin (2011) "The Actias Leach, 1815, in the Far East: how many species" is reviewed and following opinions against the paper are proposed mainly according to the type figures in this paper. 1) There is a possibility that Actias artemis (Bremer & Grey, 118531 1852) should be a subspecies of A. selene. A specimen of A. gnoma mandschurica Staudinger, 1892 in Jpmoth website (http:// www.jpmoth.org) referring by this paper is that of A. aliena (due to misidentification). 2) The Russian specimen of A. gnoma in the figure (Fig. 28) is also misidentification of A. aliena. 3) The neotype of A. apollo Rober, 1923 can be identified as a summer form of A. gnoma. The disignation [sic] of neotype based on a bred specimen with label "Japan" is unsuitable because such ambiguous collecting information must cause an issue for subsequent discussions on the subspecific classification of this species. 4) Both of the type of A. dulcinea (Butler, 1881) and A. sjoqvusti Bryk, 1948 can be identified as spring forms of A. aliena. 5) Both of the types of A. xenia Jordan, [1912] and A. jordani Niepelt, 1936 can be identified as yellowish variations of summer forms of A. aliena. A. aliena yakushimensis Kishida, 1994 should be retained as a valid subspecies because this population have two distinct characters, the smaller body size and yellowish wings even in the spring form."
