Abstract:

"This paper deals with the ♂ genitalia structures of the hybrid Attacus atlas atlas (Linnaeus, 1758) from Java, Indonesia x Attacus caesar Maassen, 1873 from the Philippines (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). The genitalia structures of the ♂ Attacus-hybrid are compared to those of A. atlas atlas (West Java) and A. caesar (Philippines, Leyte). The ♂ and ♀ adults of the hybrid A. atlas (N Thailand) x A. caesar (Philippines) and the mature larva were described and illustrated in color by Schulz & Paukstadt (2011). The ♂ and ♀ adults of the hybrid A. atlas atlas (Java) x A. caesar (Philippines) and the 5th instar larva were described and illustrated in color by Paukstadt & Paukstadt (2017). A ♀ aberration of the hybrid A. atlas (Thailand) x A. caesar (Philippinen) was figured in color by Weritz & Paukstadt (2015). The ♂ genitalia of the hybrid is distinct from those of A. atlas (Java) and A. caesar (Philippines) in the structures of the cornutus of the aedeagus, the uncus, anellus, and the saccus, as well as the coastal lobe, median lobe and saccular lobe of the valva. The structures of the hybrid are not clearly intermediary the parent species."
