Type data:
Holotype [♂] United States: "S California, near San Diego" [AMNH]. Edwards incorrectly stated that the holotype was a female (Clark, 1919) (STI 17243). Tuskes & Emmel (1981) (STI 20333) noted that the type locality of Euprosepinus euterpe is almost certainly incorrect. Edwards described many Lepidoptera that he received from H.K. Morrison, including Euproserpinus euterpe. Edwards published so many incorrect type localities for this material that Morrison was forced to publish a short note correcting them in 1883. Two of these corrections are of special interest because they are of a moth and a butterfly from Kern River, near the present Euproserpinus euterpe colony. Once this area had a thriving transport line and when Morrison travelled to Kern River, he would have passed through Walker Basin. Morrison died around 1883 and so could not correct Edwards' later erroneous localities. No euterpe have been found near San Diego (all Euproserpinus recorded from there have proven to be Euproserpinus phaeton). Therefore, it is likely that Edwards' locality is wrong and that the correct locality is in or near Walker Basin.
