Lacks the blue gloss of Macroglossum tenebrosa. Abdomen upperside tergites 3 and 4 each with a transverse, apical, buffish-white lateral patch; the trace of a similar patch also on the 2nd segment. Fan-tail unicolorous, often fading to clayish tawny at tip and ventrally; the ends of the scales never white. Underside of palpus and thorax purer white than in Macroglossum tenebrosa. Abdomen underside with 3 basal sternites each with a white or buffish-white mesial patch; the pre-ostial sternite more or less white or grey. Hindwing upperside with a buff patch and streak near anal angle, not white as in Macroglossum tenebrosa. Hindwing underside with white basal area sharply limited distally in the anal area, where it is shaded with buff at the edge.
Male genitalia: Valve with stridulatory scales. Harpe elongate, upcurved, obtuse apically, denticulate. Phallus with a long, horizontal process, which is dentate at an near the apex; 2 rows of teeth near its base, similar to Macroglossum assimilis; cornuti flattened, rounded apically, the broader one denticulate on one edge.
