Type data:
Type(s) "East Indies" [OUMO]. There are four specimens with appropriate data in OUMO: a male labelled "E. India" and three females labelled "India"; the male and one female bear a Hearsey label, the other two females do not.
Taxonomic Notes:
Synonymized with Acherontia atropos by Leech, 1888, Proc. Zool. Soc. Lond., 1888: 587 and treated as a geographical variety thereof by Staudinger, 1901, in Staudinger & Rebel, Cat. Lepid. Pal. Faunen. 1: 98. Reinstated as a species by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 17 (key), 21.
