Kernbach, 1963, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr. 67: 334, considered that Polyptychus ferroseus might be a subspecies of Polyptychus baxteri, whereas Carcasson, 1968, Jl E. Afr. nat. Hist. Soc. natn. Mus. 26 (3): 16, suggested that it was probably a synonym. Darge, 1973, Bull. Soc. ent Fr. 78: 146, examined both the holotype and a second specimen in MRAC and concluded that Polyptychus ferroseus was a valid species. Synonymized with Polyptychus aurora by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 63. Reinstated as a species by Melichar & Řezáč, , European Ent. 9: 79.
