"The statement by Grote, 1865, Proc. ent. Soc. Philad. 5: 64, 'Amplypterus Hübn. (Amplypterus Walk., Clemens), contains discordant material, while A. Ganascus [sic] is regarded evidently as the typical species of his genus by Hübner', has been mistakenly construed as a designation by Grote of Sphinx gannascus Stoll, 1790, as the type species of Amplypterus Hübner, [1819]. The International Committee on Zoological Nomenclature, 1954, Opin. Decl. int. Commn zool. Nom. 6 Opinion 275, ruled that Grote's statement did not constitute a type-species designation and that Kirby's designation of Sphinx panopus Cramer is the first valid type-species designation for Amplypterus Hübner, [1819], which was then placed on the Official List of Generic Names in Zoology with Name No. 693" (Fletcher & Nye, 1982: 10).
