SYNTYPES 2 [1♂1♀] [South Africa: Natal,] Port Natal [Durban] (ex coll. Plant); 3 [1♂ 2?] [South Africa: Natal,] Port Natal [Durban] (ex coll. Gueinzius); 2 [1♂1?] [South Africa: Natal,] Port Natal [Durban] (ex coll. Stevens) [NHMUK]. Only four of the syntypes have been located in NHMUK; the whereabouts of the remaining three is unknown, they are presumed lost.

Transferred to Basiothia by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 744 (key), 746. Erroneously transferred to Deilephila by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.6. Returned to Basiothia by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 39.
Nomenclature notes:
A Boisduval manuscript name made available by Walker first published as a nomen nudum by Boisduval, 1847, in Delegorgue, Voyage Afrique australe 2: 595. Incorrectly attributed to "Becker, Paris" by Ménétriés, 1857, Enumeratio Corporum Anim. Mus. imp. Acad. Sci. Petropolitanae (Ins. Lepid.) 2 (Lepid. Heterocera): 93.
