Nässig, Lampe & Kager listed 25 taxa of Saturniidae for the island of Sumatra and the adjacent islands. 13 taxa (plus one misidentified taxon) were recorded from Aceh. During our expeditions to Aceh further 11 taxa of the Saturniidae were recorded for Aceh for the first time, cf. Paukstadt & Paukstadt (2006a, b, 2007a, b, 2008, 2009a, b, c, and d). After our preliminary documentation on the Saturniidae of the Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam Province, northern Sumatra, Indonesia, cf. Paukstadt & Paukstadt (2009d) and a checklist on the Saturniidae of Sumatra, cf. Paukstadt & Paukstadt (2010e), some new descriptions of saturniid moths from the Indonesian Archipelago were published and nomenclatural acts proposed. New taxa and nomenclatural acts within the family Saturniidae from Sumatra and the adjacent islands were mainly confirmed by DNA barcoding (of BOLD).
At the time being 34 taxa of Saturniidae are recognized for the provinces of Sumatra that means for the main island and the adjacent smaller islands. It is amazing that of the 34 Saturniidae taxa identified so far, at least 21 taxa are endemic to Sumatra and the adjacent islands. We herewith provide with an updated checklist of the Saturniidae of Sumatra. Further taxonomical changes and new descriptions of taxa are likely due to zoogeography and intensified comparisons of the DNA structures of the Saturniidae of Southeast Asia."
