Syrian bean-caper hawk moth, &lt;em&gt;Hyles zygophylli&lt;/em&gt; L., is distributed in the eastern Palearctic region and feeds on the leaves of the Syrian bean caper, &lt;em&gt;Zygophyllum fabago&lt;/em&gt;. In order to study the life history traits and its parasitoids, continuous rearing of the Syrian bean-caper hawk moth was conducted in field and laboratory conditions. The results showed that &lt;em&gt;H. zygophylli&lt;/em&gt; completed four generations within the growing season and hibernate as pupal stage in the soil at a depth of 2 to 6 cm. The annual life cycle of the species begins in late April with the emergence of adults from overwintering pupae and ends in early October with the pupation of fourth-generation larvae. Adult hawk moths, 2-3 days after emergence, mates and begin laying eggs in irregular shape on the stems and underside of leaves. They are spherical shape, light green and 1.1 &amp;plusmn; 0.1 mm in diameter. Depends on daily temperature, the incubation period takes 3-5 days. The larval development time takes 18-25 days and pupal stage lasted 12-16 days. Laval development were completed in five larval instars. The maximum length (in rest position), head capsule, and weight of completely developed larvae were 6.6-6.9 mm, 4.9 mm, and 3.8-4.9 gr, respec-tively. The larvae of H. zygophylli were parasitized by two species of tachinid including &lt;em&gt;Masicera sphingivora&lt;/em&gt; (R.-D.) and &lt;em&gt;Tachina praeceps&lt;/em&gt; Meigen and its pupae were parasitized by a chalcid wasp namely, &lt;em&gt;Proconura barbara&lt;/em&gt; Masi, in Urmia region. For the first time, parasitic relationship between the mentioned species and &lt;em&gt;H. zygophyllum&lt;/em&gt; [sic] is reported.&lt;/p&gt;

In this study, we established methods for rearing &lt;em&gt;T. oldenlandiae&lt;/em&gt; in the laboratory using an artificial diet containing dry powder of a wild grass &lt;em&gt;Cayratia japonica&lt;/em&gt; (Thunb.) Gagnep. Several artificial diets were tested with different ratios of a commercial diet, Insecta LFM, and the dry leaf powder, and including different antibiotics, and the composition of the standard diet on which larvae performed best was determined. The standard diet contains 20 g of Insecta LFM, 4 g of leaf powder, 100 ml of water, 75 mg of chloramphenicol, and 200 &amp;mu;l of propionic acid. Larvae reared on the standard diet became larger pupae than those reared on &lt;em&gt;C. japonica&lt;/em&gt; leaves. This result suggests that the larvae have growth potential that is masked on &lt;em&gt;C. japonica&lt;/em&gt; leaves, and that &lt;em&gt;C. japonica&lt;/em&gt; may not be the most suitable host species for &lt;em&gt;T. oldenlandiae &lt;/em&gt;larvae in terms of nutrient level.&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;

Because targeted monitoring programs are resource intensive and unlikely to be performed on most insect pollinators, we took advantage of existing collection records to examine long-term trends in northeastern United States populations of 26 species of hawk moths (family Sphingidae) that are presumed to be pollinators. We compiled over 6,600 records from nine museum and 14 private collections that spanned a 112-year period, and used logistic generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) to examine long-term population trends. We controlled for uneven sampling effort by adding a covariate for list length, the number of species recorded during each sampling event. We found that of the 22 species for which there was sufficient data to assess population trends, eight species declined and four species increased in detection probability (the probability of a species being recorded during each year while accounting for effort, climate, and spatial effects in the GLMMs). Of the four species with too few records to statistically assess, two have disappeared from parts of their ranges. None of the four species with diurnal adults showed a trend in detection probability. Two species that are pests of solanaceous crops declined, consistent with a seven-fold drop in the area planted in tobacco and tomato crops. We found some evidence linking susceptibility to parasitoidism by the introduced fly &lt;em&gt;Compsilura concinnata&lt;/em&gt; (Tachinidae) to declines. Moths with larvae that feed on vines and trees, where available evidence indicates that the fly is most likely to attack, had a greater propensity to decline than species that use herbs and shrubs as larval host plants. Species that develop in the spring, before &lt;em&gt;Compsilura &lt;/em&gt;populations have increased, did not decline. However, restricting the analysis to hawk moth records from areas outside of a &amp;quot;refuge&amp;quot; area where &lt;em&gt;Compsilura &lt;/em&gt;does not occur did not significantly increase the intensity of the declines as would be predicted if &lt;em&gt;Compsilura &lt;/em&gt;was the primary cause of declines. Forests have recovered over the study period across most of the northeastern U.S., but this does not appear to have been a major factor because host plants of several of the declining species have increased in abundance with forest expansion and maturation. Climate variables used in the GLMMs were not consistently related to moth detection probability. Hawk moth declines may have ecological effects on both the plants pollinated by these species and vertebrate predators of the moths.&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;

An oviposition was found in nature comprising 17 eggs on 8 leaves. Samples of cocoons preyed upon by a mammal are illustrated. Three parasitoids are reported: the euplemid &lt;em&gt;Anastatus &lt;/em&gt;from eggs, the tachinid &lt;em&gt;Lespesia &lt;/em&gt;sp. near texana, and the chalcidid &lt;em&gt;Conura maria&lt;/em&gt; from cocoons, the latter two for the first time. Predation on a third-instar larva by the vespid &lt;em&gt;Polistes exclamans&lt;/em&gt; was observed. Phototactic behavior of males (which are normally diurnal) and a multiple mating by a female are newly reported. Three new county records for Texas are cited. Biochemical analyses were done on unfed first-instar larvae, fed second-instar larvae, mature larvae, and adult moths, and the following compounds were found: 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine, dopamine,&amp;nbsp; norepinephrine, hydroquinone, 2- (dimethylamino) ethylacetate, trehalose, and 3,5-dimethylphenol, some of which probably provide protection from predators. Trials on larvae were conducted in the lab and field with five species of ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) to test for chemical protection against predation. It was observed that larvae have some chemical protection from ants, and because some of the above mentioned biogenic chemicals were found to be carried into the adult stage, it is proposed that moths of &lt;em&gt;E. calleta&lt;/em&gt; may be M&amp;uuml;llerian instead of Batesian mimics of &lt;em&gt;Battus &lt;/em&gt;(Papilionidae)&amp;quot;&lt;/p&gt;
