Abstract: | "In November 2024 the authors made a tour from Pangandaran, West Java Province, to the D.I. (Daerah Istimewa = Special Region) Yogyakarta, Central Java Province, East Java Province, and back to Pangandaran. We wanted to know how the silk industry in Central Java had developed in the post-Corona period, cf. Paukstadt & Paukstadt (2019a, b, 2020a, b, c, and 2023a, b). We received a lot of information from various sources and made the following observations. The founder of Jamtra Silk, Mr. Anto (Yogyakarta), is still very interested in establishing a local silk industry for wild silks (Samia, Cricula, Attacus, and Antheraea, all family Saturniidae). During our trip we were able to meet senior staff from the Faculty of Engineering at Insteper University (Insteper Niwat – New Insteper with Advanced Technology), the Faculty of Biology at University Gajah Mada / UGM, both in Yogyakarta, and local officials and learn about various local projects. In particular, Mr. Anto tries to arouse interest among the population, school children and students and to involve them. In addition to the Eri silk of Samia ricini JONES in Anderson, 1791 (Phalaena), only Cricula silk of Cricula trifenestrata javana WATSON, 1913 and cloth (by the meter) and processed cloth (mostly scarves) are currently produced in small quantities by hand, i.e. not industrially. These are unique pieces and therefore of course also have their price." |
