Macroglossum stellatarum
Antenna strongly clubbed, hook short, the terminal segment not very elongate.
Male genitalia: Uncus slender, gradually narrowed to a point, slightly hooked, not dilated apically either vertically of horizontally. Gnathos round at the tip. Valve without stridulatory scales. Harpe slightly curved, rounded-dilated apically, where it is rough with short spines and teeth. Phallus with one long, slender, pointed process, which is densely and heavily dentate on the proximal surface; the base of the process also heavily dentate, dilated distad. Cornuti obtuse, one clubbed and with a notched ridge; the other flat, concave on one side, with the edge finely serrate.
A specimen of Macroglossum stellatarum was intercepted in Norfolk, Virginia, USA (see ipetrus.blogspot.fr/2013/05/more-invasive-species-detected-at-us.html). This record is not mapped.
A specimen was photographed on 17.iv.2017 nectaring at Raphanus sativus at Whittier, California, USA (http://bugguide.net/node/view/1360214/bgimage). It probably arrived as a hibernating adult in cargo from either Japan or Europe (http://tpittaway.tripod.com/sphinx/m_ste.htm). This record has not been mapped.
The Maharashtra record is a specimen from "Palli Hill, Bandora" (now Pali Hill, Bandra, Mumbai) and most likely an accidental introduction or a vagrant.
