Synonymized with Sphinx celeus by Meyrick, 1899, in Sharp (ed.), Fauna Hawaiiensis1(2): 193; then with Protoparce quinquemaculatus as a subspecies by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool.9 (suppl.): 72. Reinstated as a species and transferred to Manduca by Riotte, 1986, Proc. hawaiian ent. Soc.27: 81. Erroneously queried as a synonym of Manduca quinquemaculata by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 24. Erroneously treated as a synonym of Manduca quinquemaculata by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen.
