This subspecies was first referred to as "Smerinthus ocellata var." by Lucas, 1856, Bull. Soc. ent. Fr. 1856: 92. Synonymized with Smerinthus ocellatus [sic] by Rothschild, 1894, Novit. zool. 1: 98. Reinstated as a geographic variety by Staudinger, 1901, in Staudinger & Rebel, Cat. Lepid. Pal. Faunen. 1: 99. Raised to species status by Eitschberger, Danner & Surholt, 1989, Atalanta 20: 261. Resynonymized with Smerinthus ocellata as a subspecies by Pittaway, 1993, The hawkmoths of the Western Palaearctic: 100. Erroneously treated as a species by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.22. Resynonymized with Smerinthus ocellata as a subspecies by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the World: 66. Reinstated as a species, with no additional evidence for species status, by Eitschberger, 2002, Neue ent. Nachr. 53: 89.
