HOLOTYPE [India: West Bengal,] Darjeeling [Darling], bred (Shervill) [CMNH].
Taxonomic Notes:
Synonymized (as ‡shervillei) with Acosmeryx ancea [sic] by Hampson, 1893, Fauna Brit. India 1: 82. Treated as a synonym of Acosmeryx naga by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.1. Reinstated as a species by Haruta, 1994, Tinea 14 (suppl. 1): 156.
Nomenclature notes:
First proposed by Boisduval in synonymy with Acosmeryx naga, but further down on the same page, he used shervillii for a different, new species. Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 533, rejected this name, arguing that because Boisduval had included it first in synonymy with Acosmeryx naga, he was not justified in using the same name subsequently for a new species.
