LECTOTYPE ♂ Brazil: St. Catharina [Santa Catarina] [CMNH]; designated by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 180. Known only from the lectotype male.
Taxonomic Notes:
There is a specimen of Xylophanes tersa tersa in the NHMUK from an unknown locality that approaches Xylophanes ferotinus in the hindwing pattern, suggesting that the latter may be no more than an aberration of the former. Haxaire & Mielke ([2020]) (STI 22136) suggested Xylophanes ferotinus might be a hybrid between Xylophanes tersa and Xylophanes indistincta.
