Abstract:

"The rearing of Marumba sperchius (MÉNÉTRIÈS, 1866) is described in a series of pictures, from the egg to the imago, to demonstrate the development of the species. In total 127 eggs were laid by one single ♀, caught at light on April 15th 2018 in Phia Den (North Vietnam, Cao Bang Provinz, Nguyen Binh, 1023 m NN) (fig. 384). The first caterpillars started hatching immediately after their arrival in Marktleuthen, April 24th 2018. After the develpopment of six instars, the full grown caterpillar changed the colour from green to light-brown, and started wandering around (figs. 348-356). The caterpillar pupated on the ground between dry Fagus leaves. The surrounding leaves were wetened by a sweattened moisture from the body (figs. 357- 363). The pupation was completed in the morning of July 1st 2018, when two pupae were seen (figs. 364-366) - a third caterpillar pupated July 5th 2018. A couple emerged from the first two pupae from July 1st 2018 in the evening at about 9 p. m. (summertime), July 29th 2018. So, from hatching of the caterpillars until emerging of the adults, the development took 97 days. The development of the caterpillars in the egg took 10 days. Most of the time (April 24th until June 30th 2018), the caterpillars were reared in Marktleuthen/Bavaria (approx. 500 m a.s.l.) and then in Schenna (Italy, Southern Tyrol, 500 m a.s.l.) from May 31st until June 7th 2018 - again after that time in Marktleuthen."
