| Abstract: | "This paper deals with the Saturniidae (Lepidoptera) of the world’s second largest island New Guinea and its adjacent smaller islands belonging to Melanesia, a subregion of Oceania. The western part of New Guinea belongs to Indonesia and the eastern part to Papua Newguinea. The Moluccan islands of the Aru Archipelago, Halmahera, Obi, and Bacan as well as the small islands of the Arafura Sea are excluded. Comprehensive studies on the Saturniidae (Lepidoptera) from New Guinea and adjacent islands were recently done by Paukstadt & Paukstadt (2006a-b, 2012a-o, 2013, 2020a-c, 2022), Brechlin (2004, 2023), Naumann (2009), Naumann & Löffler (2010), Naumann, Nässig & Löffler (2017), Paukstadt, Paukstadt & Večerik (2017), Naumann & Lane (2020a, b), and Paukstadt, Paukstadt & van Schayck (2022). At present 79 taxa of the genera Coscinocera BUTLER, 1879, and Neodiphthera FLETCHER, 1982, Pararhodia COCKERELL, 1914, and Syntherata MAASSEN, 1873 are known in species or subspecies rank for New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Other names are based on older unconfirmed specimens in collections and/or introduced taxa. We herewith provide with an updated checklist of the Saturniidae of New Guinea and adjacent islands." |
