| Abstract: | "A new genus of the family Eupterotidae, subfamily Eupterotinae, is erected: Strigognatha gen. n.; type species Sphingognatha khasiana Moore, 1879, by our designation. We introduce this new genus for a small group of species occurring in the eastern Himalaya and in some southern and eastern extensions into NE India, S China, Myanmar and N Thailand. The type species, Strig. khasiana (Moore, 1879), comb. n., was described in the genus Sphingognatha C. & R. Felder, 1874, a second previously named member, S. strix (Bryk, 1944), comb. rev., is again removed from the original genus Apha Walker, 1855 applied by Bryk (1944) in error and other generic combinations. Six further species are described as new to science: Strigognatha smetaceki Naumann & Nässig, 2023, sp. n., from India, Arunachal Pradesh, and China, Yunnan, HT ♂ to be deposited in MfNB. Strig. thailandica Naumann & Nässig, 2023, sp. n., from Thailand, Chiang Mai Prov., HT ♂ to be deposited in MfNB. Strig. murzini Naumann & Nässig, 2023, sp. n., from Myanmar, Kachin State, Putao, Zi Yar Dam, HT ♂ in SMFL. Strig. aungsansuukyiae Naumann & Nässig, 2023, sp. n., from Myanmar (W), Chin State, Mindat, HT ♂ to be deposited in MfNB. Strig. pseudostrix Naumann & Nässig, 2023, sp. n., from Myanmar, Kachin State, Chudu Razi Hills, HT ♂ to be deposited in MfNB. Strig. intensa Naumann & Nässig, 2023, sp. n., from China, Xizang Zizhiqu (Tibet), Motuo, and India, Arunachal Pradesh, HT ♂ to be deposited in MfNB. All involved taxa are medium-sized and show different tones of ochreous colour with a set of several nearly straight, almost parallel wavy lines, running obliquely across all wings. Preimaginal instars, life history, ecology etc. are unknown for all species." |
