Abstract:

"Antheraea (Antheraea) jana (STOLL in Cramer, 1782) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) is distributed on the Indonesian islands of Java, Bali, Lombok, and Sumbawa; see BOLD Systems v4 and BOLD v5. Meister (2011) cited ten different, mostly secondary food plants for the larvae. Paukstadt & Paukstadt (2025) recorded two previously unknown primary food plants, see also Paukstadt, Suhardjono & Paukstadt (2003) for the distribution of the genus Antheraea HÜBNER, 1819 [“1816”] and its host plants in Indonesia.
After we successfully identified Muntingia calabura L. (Muntingiaceae), common names are Pohon Ceri (Indonesian), Jamaican cherry, Panama berry, and Singapore cherry (English) and Japanse kers (Dutch) of the order Malvales as host plant for larvae of A. (A.) jana from Central Java, and Terminalia mantaly H. PERRIER, 1953 of the family Combretaceae, common names are Madagascar Almond and Umbrella Tree (English) as host plant for larvae of A. (A.) jana from East Java, cf. Paukstadt & Paukstadt 2025), we can now also confirm T. mantaly as host plant of jana from Central Java. Although the leaves of T. mantaly are quite small compared to other species of the genus Terminalia L., incidentally just as small as the leaves of M. calabura, they are readily accepted by the larvae of A. jana. T. mantaly originated in Madagascar and was often planted along roadsides and in public spaces in Indonesia because of its structure. Its pagoda-like growth with widely spreading branches provides excellent shade, hence its English name "umbrella tree."
Due to the easy availability of two presumably ideal forage plants, breeding experiments with A. (A.) jana are currently being conducted by Mr. Anto (Yamtra Silk, Yogyakarta). The main objective is to determine whether the cocoons are suitable for silk production on the island of Java."
