Recherchen zu den Typenfundorten zweier Taxa der frithi-Gruppe der nominotypischen Untergattung Antheraea Hübner, 1819 [„1816“] von Sumatra (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae)

"Antheraea (Antheraea) gschwandneri NIEPELT in Strand, 1918 and A. (A.) sumatrana NIEPELT, 1926 are two taxa of the frithi-complex of the frithi-group of the nominotypical subgenus Antheraea HÜBNER, 1819 [“1816”] (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from Sumatra, Indonesia. The type localities were given in the original description as Poerangie in Sumatra (for gschwandneri) and Toerangie Sumatra (for sumatrana) by Niepelt (1918, 1926). Thus far the correct geographical locations of the type localities were never verified but Poerangie was seen as a possibly incorrect spelling, cf. Nässig, Lampe & Kager (1996). We had researched both locations in detail and found that Poerangie is a misspelling and Toerangie is an old spelling from the Dutch colonial period. Both taxa were actually described from the same site and today their type localities might be read as follows: Indonesia, Sumatra I., North Sumatra Province, Langkat Regency, Turangie Estate (50 km W of Medan), average elevation 122 m.
The Toerangie Rubber Company Limited was founded June 29th, 1910 (Registered Office: Victoria, Hongkong) in the division of Langkat, district of Upper Langkat. This is the northernmost Regency in the North Sumatra Province close to the southeastern border of Aceh Province. Estate Toerangie: 8,048 acres [3,257 hectare], average elevation 400 feet [122 m] above sea-level. Above details are from Swart (1911): Rubber Companies in the Netherlands East Indies. Further information was compiled by Bos (1911) in: The S.E.C. (Sumatra-East-Coast) Rubber Handbook 1911 under the name of Toerangi. The actual name today is Perkebunan Turangie (Turangie Estate). The name Turangi is also occasionally in use."
