| Abstract: | "Antheraea (Antheraea) gschwandneri NIEPELT in Strand, 1918 and A. (A.) sumatrana NIEPELT, 1926 are two taxa of the frithi-complex of the frithi-group of the nominotypical subgenus Antheraea HÜBNER, 1819 [“1816”] (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) from Sumatra, Indonesia. The type localities were given in the original description as Poerangie in Sumatra (for gschwandneri) and Toerangie Sumatra (for sumatrana) by Niepelt (1918, 1926). Thus far the correct geographical locations of the type localities were never verified but Poerangie was seen as a possibly incorrect spelling, cf. Nässig, Lampe & Kager (1996). We had researched both locations in detail and found that Poerangie is a misspelling and Toerangie is an old spelling from the Dutch colonial period. Both taxa were actually described from the same site and today their type localities might be read as follows: Indonesia, Sumatra I., North Sumatra Province, Langkat Regency, Turangie Estate (50 km W of Medan), average elevation 122 m. |
