Abstract:

"A native hostplant for larvae of Attacus suparmani PAUKSTADT & PAUKSTADT, 2002 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) has been identified on the Island of Alor, Eastern Lesser Sunda Islands, Indonesia: Heptapleurum ellipticum (BLUME) SEEM., better known under the synonym Schefflera ellipticum (BLUME) HARMS (Araliaceae). We are grateful to Drs. Suhardjono (Cibinong-Bogor, West Java, Indonesia) for the identification of the host plant, which is a first record for A. suparmani and probably also a first record of the plant for Alor. H. ellipticum, commonly known in Australia as the climbing umbrella tree, is a plant in the family Araliaceae native to the Indian subcontinent, Indochina, Malesia, Papuasia, and Australia. The climbing umbrella tree is a vine or scandent shrub growing up to 10 m high and a stem diameter of up to 9 cm. Further two Schefflera species have been already cited by Peigler (1989) as hostplants for A. atlas (LINNAEUS, 1758) and A. lorquinii C. & R. FELDER, 1861. Therefore this is not a first record of the genus Schefflera J.R. FORST. & G. FORST. for the genus Attacus LINNAEUS, 1767."
