| Abstract: | "The monkey-moth genus Stenoglene Felder & Felder, 1874 and its allies, Epijana Holland, 1893, Drepanojana Aurivillius, 1893, Urojana Gaede, 1915 and Pterocerota Hampson, 1905, are fully reviewed and redefined based on a synthesis of morphological and barcode data. Stenoglene is found to be polyphyletic and in order to maintain monophyly, ten new genera are established: Artemisana gen. n., Atopojana gen. n., Cryptojana gen. n., Hecateana gen. n., Lokiana gen. n., Microjana gen. n., Neojana gen. n., Nepenthojana gen. n., Smithiana gen. n. and Streptojana gen. n. Eighteen new species are described in ten genera: Cryptojana volynkini sp. n., Drepanojana hogani sp. n., Hecateana dargei sp. n., Hecateana giustii sp. n., Hecateana kitchingi sp. n., Lokiana lydiae sp. n., Microjana bouyeri sp. n., Microjana hikaru sp. n., Microjana tabithae sp. n., Pterocerota anima sp. n., Smithiana smithi sp. n., Stenoglene lucindae sp. n., Stenoglene sarahae sp. n., Stenoglene susanae sp. n., Streptojana forbesi sp. n., Streptojana laurenae sp. n., Streptojana molliae sp. n. and Urojana basquini sp. n. Seven species are revived from synonymy and forty-four new combinations are proposed: Artemisana thelda (Druce, 1887) comb. n., Atopojana bouyeri (Basquin, 2013) comb. n., Cryptojana cinerea (Holland, 1893) comb. n., Cryptojana clucki (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Cryptojana decellei (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Cryptojana grandiplaga (Holland, 1920) stat. rev., comb. n., Cryptojana insignifica (Rothschild, 1917) comb. n., Cryptojana maculifera (Strand, 1912) comb. n., Cryptojana noellae (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Cryptojana plagiata (Aurivillius, 1911) comb. n., Cryptojana preussi (Aurivillius, 1893) comb. n., Cryptojana shabae (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Drepanojana maeonia (Druce, 1896) stat. rev., Epijana gigantea (Rothschild, 1917) comb. n., Hecateana paulisi (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Lokiana sigyna (Aurivillius, 1893) comb. n., Microjana annae (Giusti & László, 2025) comb. n., Microjana brunneofasciata (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Microjana citrina (Druce, 1886) comb. n., Microjana citrinoides (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Microjana dallastai (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Microjana dehanica (Strand, 1911) comb. n., Microjana dufranei (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Microjana fontainei (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Microjana fouassini (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Microjana latimaculata (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Microjana morettoi (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Microjana novempunctata (Bethune-Baker, 1927) stat. rev., comb. n., Microjana opalina (Druce, 1910) comb. n., Microjana parvula (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Microjana pellucida (Joicey & Talbot, 1924) comb. n., Microjana pujoli (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Microjana sinjaevi (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Microjana smithi (László & Giusti, 2025) comb. n., Microjana subiridescens (Holland, 1893) comb. n., Microjana sulphureoides (Kühne, 2007) comb. n., Microjana sulphureotincta (Strand, 1912) comb. n., Microjana uelei (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Neojana pseudosygina (Bouyer & Basquin, 2012) comb. n., Nepenthojana plenevauxae (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Nepenthojana uniformis (Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980) comb. n., Pterocerota perissinottoi (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Smithiana bipartita (Rothschild, 1917) comb. n., Stenoglene elgonae (Bethune-Baker, 1927) stat. rev., Stenoglene gregorii (Butler, 1894) stat. rev., Stenoglene labda (Druce, 1887) stat. rev., Stenoglene similis (Rothschild, 1917) stat. rev., Streptojana brunnea (Bouyer, 2012) comb. n., Streptojana nivalis (Rothschild, 1917) comb. n. Six synonymies are newly established or revived: Phasicnecus livingstonensis (Strand, 1909) syn. n. considered a synonym of Stenoglene labda, Phasicnecus aequidistans Strand, 1915 syn. n. considered a synonym of Stenoglene pira Druce, 1896, Phasicnecus pulverulentus Joicey & Talbot, 1924 syn. n. and Phasicnecus similis flavidior Rothschild, 1917 syn. rev. considered synonyms of Stenoglene similis, Stenoglene decellei flava Dall’Asta & Poncin, 1980 syn. n. considered a synonym of Cryptojana decellei, and Hoplojana purpurata Wichgraf, 1921 syn. n. considered a synonym of Epijana gigantea. The hitherto unknown female of Urojana eborea Gaede, 1915, is described and illustrated based on a recently-collected, barcode-confirmed specimen. Diagnostic morphological characters, namely the forewing venation and male genitalia are reviewed, and insights into the biogeography of this group of moths are briefly discussed in light of the taxonomic rearrangement and accurate delimitation of genera." |
