Abstract:

"In a previous contribution to knowledge the genus Coscinocera BUTLER, 1879 (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae) the authors Paukstadt, Paukstadt & van Schayck (2024) noted that C. jayapurana BRECHLIN, 2023 and C. cendrawasihensis PAUKSTADT & PAUKSTADT in Paukstadt, Paukstadt & van Schayck, 2022 show almost similar ♂ genitalia structures. No taxonomic changes were made because DNA barcoding (at BOLD) of C. jayapurana has been not publicly available at that time. The taxonomic status of C. jayapurana was further investigated now. Since the holotype of C. jayapurana was not available for DNA barcoding, a ♂ paratype from the type location was used for genetic examination. The name jayapurana revealed as a junior subjective synonym of cendrawasihensis. Both names were found grouping in the same bin of the BOLD TaxonID Tree: C. jayapurana syn. nov. The distribution area of cendrawasihensis (Indonesia, Papua Prov., Nabire Regency) and the closest relative karkarensis PAUKSTADT & PAUKSTADT in Paukstadt, Paukstadt & van Schayck, 2022 (Papua New Guinea, Madang Prov., Karkar I.) extends along the northern coast of New Guinea. The type location Jayapura is roughly in the middle of both locations. The ♂ genitalia of C. karkarensis, C. jayapurana and C. cendrawasihensis are figured comparatively as well as the BOLD TaxonID Tree."
