| Abstract: | "The authors revise the species of the Hippotion brennus group (Stoll, 1782). They specify the actual systematics by indicating the list of taxa described and the current synonymies. They decided to stabilize the nomenclature by designating a lectotype [sic] of H. brennus from the same geographical area as the Stoll’s specimen. They revalidated the taxon rubribrenna Joicey & Kaye, 1917, which had been synonymized with H. brennus for 25 years, as a valid species. They describe Hippotion jakli n. sp. from the Obi islands and Hippotion natalieae n. sp. from the Solomon Islands, the latter species cohabiting with the species H. brennus. They confirm the synonymy of H. novaebrittaniae Clark, 1932 with H. brennus on the basis of morphology and barcodes. The taxon H. viettei Darge, 1975 is also studied, and insofar as, for anatomical reasons, we reject its synonymy with H. brennus, we establish it as a valid subspecies of H. rubribrenna, pending a genetic study currently impossible on a type specimen of 1968. H. joiceyi Clark, 1922 is first mentioned from the Australian mainland, which is an astonishing new record for that country, and a subspecies of joiceyi is described from the Obi Islands, Moluccas, under the name Hippotion joiceyi moluca n. ssp." |
