Proposed conditionally as the name to be used should the Cuban taxon prove distinct from Philampelus lycaon [sic] sensu Grote. Synonymized with Pholus satellitia as a [geographic] variety by Grote, 1865, Trans. ent. Soc. Amer. 3: 185; then as a subspecies by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 482. Erroneously synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by Carcasson & Heppner, 1996, Atlas Neotrop. Lepid. 4B: 57, who considered that the incorrect subsequent spelling and misidentification of material from Argentina by Burmeister, 1878, Descr. physique République Argentine 5 (Lépid.) (1): 348, was the correct name and type locality for this subspecies. Reinstated as a subspecies by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 45.
