The DNA barcode of the holotype, allotype and three paratypes of Euryglottis johannes nest within a cluster of sequences of Euryglottis aper from various localities in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. The purported diagnostic morphological characters all fall within the range of variation of Euryglottis aper and thus there is no justification for maintaining separate species status for Euryglottis johannes.
