Taxonomic Notes:

The analysis of the higher classification of Sphingidae using five nuclear genes by Kawahara et al. (2009: Figure 3) placed Gnathothlibus as the strongly supported sister-group of a clade comprising genus Eupanacra + tribe Choerocampina.

Nomenclature notes:

Gnathothlibus was again proposed as a new genus by Wallengren, 1861, K. Svenska Fregatten Eugenies Resa ... C.A. Virgin 1851-53 2 (Zool.) (1, Insecta): 362.
