Type data:
LECTOTYPE ♂ [Bangladesh:] Silhet [Sylhet] (Pres. J.C. Dale) [NHMUK]; designated by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 160.
Taxonomic Notes:
Synonymized with Psilogramma menephron menephron by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 42. Incorrectly synonymized with Psilogramma melanomera by Eitschberger, 2001, Neue ent. Nachr. 52: 6. Reinstated as a species by Eitschberger, 2010, Neue ent. Nachr. 64: 15.
The populations of Psilogramma discistriga from Timor/Tanimbar, the Lesser Sunda Islands, the main islands of the Philippines and the remaining populations occurring from Taiwan/Borneo/Bali westwards form generally discrete clusters in a neighbor-joining tree derived from DNA sequence data, with average distances between them of 1.75–2%. However, in the absence of any consistent morphological difference between the last three of these, they are all treated here as a single taxon, Psilogramma discistriga discistriga. However, the consistent coloration difference observed in the Timor/Tanimbar moths is considered here to be sufficient justification for treating them as a separate subspecies, Psilogramma discistriga hayati (q.v.). There is a minor divergence in DNA barcodes between the northwestern and southeastern populations of Psilogramma discistriga discistriga on the Asian mainland and Greater Sunda Islands, but with some overlap in northern Thailand and Vietnam. This may be evidence of a slight past divergence into two groups that are now in the process of reintegrating (as is seen in several other sphingid genera).
