Hemaris gracilis (Taxonomy)

Similar to Hemaris thysbe but separable by the presence of a pair of re-brown bands on the ventro-lateral surface of the thorax. Thorax laterally a pair of red-brown horizontal stripes.Abdomen brownish-red with cream median spots, largest on the anterior segments. Forewing discal cell with an undivided small apical transparent area. Hindwing underside with a cream-coloured area below the transparent area. Uncus as in Hemaris fuciformis, but subapically (not apically) sinuate beneath.Gnathos as in Hemaris staudingeri, but narrower. Juxta carinate beneath, ending in a slender and smooth point.Left valve deeply sinuate ventrally, the proximal part not projecting as much as in Hemaris fuciformis, broader than in Hemaris thysbe; right valve broader than in Hemaris thysbe, feebly emarginate ventrally beyond middle,Left harpe not projecting, gradually narrowed with a few setae; right harpe without free process, gradually narrowed to a point.Aedeagus differing from that of the other species of Hemaris in the apical process being truncate and, along the apical edge, dentate. Ductus bursae very lightly sclerotized.Signum absent.
