LECTOTYPE ♂ British East Africa [Kenya]: 120 miles from coast, Kedai, 2500', 25.xi.«1911» (W. Feather) [NHMUK]; designated by Rothschild & Jordan, 1923, Novit. zool. 23: 262, who stated “The type is in the Tring Museum, kindly presented by W. Feather. The specimen differs from H. rosae Butl. (1882) in its inferior size, in the antennae not being pink, and the hindwing being somewhat more huffish and having a more distinct blackish marginal band”. The lectotype has since lost its antennae.
Taxonomic Notes:
Carcasson, 1968, Jl E. Afr. nat. Hist. Soc. natn. Mus. 26 (3): 125, considered that Hippotion dexippus could be a seasonal form of Hippotion rosae that is restricted to the drier parts of that species' range. Synonymized with Hippotion rosae by Wiltshire, 1990, Fauna Saudi Arabia 11: 144. Reinstated as a species by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.9.
