Hippotion eson
Superficially similar in general appearance to the Asian Hippotion echeclus, but generally larger and easily distinguished by features of the male genitalia. Very similar to Hippotion gracilis but generally larger, darker and with a more contrasting forewing and abdominal upperside pattern. Forewing upperside ground colour buff with five oblique postmedial lines and three submarginal pale brown lines; very similar to Hippotion gracilis but first and second postmedial lines stronger and darker brown, and thus confluent; discal spot on average larger. Hindwing upperside pinkish-orange with a black basal patch and a pale brown marginal band. Male wingspan = 60.8 - 75.9mm (n = 3); female wingspan = 75.8 - 86.7mm (n = 3) .
Male genitalia:Uncus sharply sinuate. Gnathos suddenly narrowed into a sharp hook. Juxta short, triangular.Harpe short and broad with an upcurved apex. Left lobe of apical process of phallus with up to three isolated thorns; right lobe produced as a heavily sclerotized, sharply pointed, lanceolate process with a variable number of lateral teeth.
Female genitalia: Signum longer and broader than in Hippotion gracilis with somewhat larger teeth.
Most literature and many collection records cannot be mapped due to potential confusion with Hippotion gracilis.
