Hippotion leucocephalus
The identity of this taxon, known only from the holotype female, is extremely unclear, especially as R├Âber stated it was only "presumably a species found in Africa". It may be a better match to Hippotion aurora aurora than to Hippotion celerio, but the matter will only be settled by examination of the holotype, the current depository of which is unknown.
Stated to be similar to Hippotion celerio but distinguishable by the almost white, rather than brown, head. Upperside of head white.Upperside of labial palps and antennae more brown than Hippotion celerio.Tegulae broadly yellowish along the median edges.Upperside of abdomen with four longitudinal black lines but no trace of a silver pattern and no subdorsal black spots. Tarsal spines better developed than in Hippotion celerio. Forewing upperside similar to Hippotion celerio but: oblique pale postmedian stripe broader, not silver-coloured, and having only the anterior brown line; apex with several distinct arrow-shaped marks between the postmedian band and the costa; fringe darker and clearly chequered. Hindwing upperside similar to Hippotion celerio but: pink postmedian band broader and thus the black median band narrower; black submarginal band somewhat toothed and thinner, extending further towards the tornus. Wingspan: 70 mm.
