Hippotion paukstadti
Very similar to Hippotion brennus and Hippotion joiceyi but smaller; distinguishable from the former by the lack of paired subdorsal white spots on the abdomen, and from the latter by the pale grey frons and labial palps. Outer margin of forewing more angulate at M3 than in Hippotion brennus and Hippotion joiceyi. Frons and upperside of labial palps pale grey. Upperside of thorax with a grey medial stripe (white in Hippotion brennus and Hippotion joiceyi). Upperside of abdomen similar to Hippotion joiceyi but abdomen with a series of paired black spots dorsally. Male FWL: 23-24 mm. Female FWL: 23 mm.
Male genitalia: Similar to Hippotion brennus but: Uncus longer and thinner. Gnathos much longer, sharply pointed and heavily sclerotized. Harpe thick basally, more heavily sclerotized apically, with a small sharp tooth on the dorsal edge apically.
Records from Ambon, Java and the Aru Islands by Eitschberger (2002) (STI 17732) are considered erroneous, the result of papered specimens from multiple localities in composite parcels becoming mixed when bags from broke or came open in transit from collectors and dealers, and subsequent uncritical assessment.
