Hippotion socotrensis
Diagnostic description:
A small pale grey-brown species, looking more like a species of Basiothia than Hippotion. Fringes of forewings and hindwings chequered black and white. Antennae short and distinctly clubbed. Forewing upperside pale grey-brown with a diffuse darker brown transverse postmedial band, a narrow dark brown submarginal line and between them a diagnostic darker brown triangular patch on the costa. FWL: 22 mm.
Male genitalia: uncus slender; gnathos short, very broad dorso-ventrally, apically sclerotized; valve with numerous small stridulatory scales; harpe short, broad, apically upcurved; phallus stout, curved, apical process with a short dentate process on the left and a long oblique row of teeth on the right.
