HOLOTYPE ♂ [China: Xinjiang,] western Gobi [eastern Tian Shan], Chamyl (Hami)[/Kumul], 800-900m [MNHU].
Taxonomic Notes:
Proposed as a subspecies of Celerio hippophaes. Raised to species status by Shchetkin, 1956, Izvest. Akad. Nauk tadzhik. SSR, (Otdel. Estest Vennijkh Nauk) 16: 143. Implictly transferred to Hyles by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 184. Pittaway (1997-onwards) (STI 19617) considered that the name chamyla applied to smaller, paler specimens of this species that result from larvae feeding on wild Apocynum in arid and semi-arid areas (cf. Hyles x apocyni).
