Type(s) America [ZMUC]. There are two specimens in the Keil collection, ZMUC, a male of which is labelled "type".

Synonymized (inversely) with Sphinx livornica by Hübner, 1807, Samml. eur. Schmett. (Sphing.; Ziefer text): 96. Reinstated as a species by Harris, 1839, Amer. J. Sci. Arts 36: 304. Resynonymized with Deilephila livornica by Walker, 1856, List Specimens lepid. Insects Colln Br. Mus. 8: 164. This inverted synonymy was corrected by Ménétriés, 1857, Enumeratio Corporum Anim. Mus. imp. Acad. Sci. Petropolitanae (Ins. Lepid.) 2 (Lepid. Heterocera): 91. Transferred to Celerio by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 714 (key), 731.
