Taxonomic Notes:
Proposed as a subspecies of Celerio livornica. Synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by Griveaud, 1959, Faune Madag. 8: 121. Reinstated as a subspecies by Haxaire, 1993, Lambillionea 93: 159. Resynonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by Vives Moreno, 1994, Cat. sist. sinon. Lepid. Penin. Iberica y Baleares 2: 421. Raised to species status by Eitschberger & Surholt, 1999, Atalanta 29: 13. Resynonymized with Hyles livornica by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 51. Reinstated as a species by Eitschberger, 2003, Neue. ent. Nachr. 54: 70. Resynonymized with Hyles livornica by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
Using data derived from the mitochondrial genes COI and COII and the nuclear gene EF-1α, Hundsdoerfer et al. (2009: Fig. 1) showed that there was no significant difference between the population of Hyles livornica from Namibia and those from France, Morocco, Oman and Kazakhstan. Consequently, the assignment of the southern African populations of Hyles livornica to Hyles malgassica as a separate species is spurious and malgassica is here considered to be a synonym of livornica. However, it still remains to be determined by DNA sequence analysis whether the Madagascan population is deserving of recognition as a separate named taxon.
