Type data:
HOLOTYPE ♂ Japan: Nakatsugawa, Awajishima, Sumoto City, 3.v.1975 (S. Tobi) [NHMUK ]. The data given in the original description and on the specimen originally labelled as holotype in NHMUK disagreed. H. Inoue (in litt., 2.iv.2001) stated that the "holotype", which is labeled “Shimane, Ichibata, 7.v.1967 (T. Maenama)”, is a mislabeled paratype (though the data in the original description give the capture date as “5.v.1969”). The true holotype was found as part of the J.-M. Cadiou collection, and is now in NHMUK, correctly labelled.
Taxonomic Notes:
STAT. REV. Proposed as a subspecies of Oxyambulyx sericeipennis. Transferred to Ambulyx (as Ambulyx sericeipennis tobii) by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.2. Synonymized with the nominotypical subspecies by Kobayashi, Wang & Yano, 2006, Tinea, 19: 172. Raised to species status by Brechlin, 2009, Entomo-Satsphingia 2 (2): 61. Resynonymized with Ambulyx sericeipennis as a subspecies by Kishida, 2018, Japan. Heterocerists’ J. 287: 288, who was unaware of the raising to species status by Brechlin (2009) and believed the status of Ambulyx tobii was as a junior synonym of Ambulyx sericeipennis sericeipennis.
