Transferred to Lophostethus by Butler, 1876, Trans. zool. Soc. Lond. 9: 585 (as ‡demolinii).

Nomenclature notes:

References by authors to the publication of the name Sphinx dumolinii earlier than that of Angas probably derive from an illustration of the species, based on a specimen from Senegal supplied by Boisduval, published with only the vernacular name "Smérinthe Dumolin" by Latreille, 1830, in Cuvier, Règne Animal (Edn 2) 3: 438 and footnote, pl. 20, fig. 1 (Fletcher & Nye, 1982, in Nye (ed.), Generic Names Moths of the World 4: 93). Boisduval, 1875, in: Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid. Hétérocères) 1: 15, incorrectly attributed Smerinthus dumolinii to himself in Latreille's work.
