Proposed as a subspecies of Maassenia heydeni. Raised to species status by Gehlen, 1941, Ent. Z. 55: 179. Resynonymized with Maassenia heydeni by Viette, 1990, Faune Madag. (suppl.) 1: 114. Reinstated as a species by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.13.
