Macroglossum gyrans
Forewing length varying from 16 to 23 mm. Antenna with terminal segment shorter than the 3 subterminal segments together. Upperside of head, thorax, and basal half of abdomen the same grey colour as the forewing upperside. Abdomen with posterior tergites not much darker than basal ones, except for a basal spot on each side that may be enlarged; 3 orange lateral patches on segments 2-4 large, confluent; 1st tergite and metanotum tawny laterally; base of 7th white, the belt interrupted centrally by a black spot. Underside of palpus, thorax, and legs apart from post-tarsus, almost pure white. Sides of thorax and legs shaded or speckled with brown scales. Abdomen underside grey brown, the side tuft of 3rd segment white, the 6th brownish black with a buff tip. Forewing upperside grey; 2 antemedial and 2 discal lines distinct, the intervening spaces not filled with black; the discal lines strongly curved costad at vein M2, concave between vein M3 and hind margin. Both wings undersides dull ochraceous tawny, shaded with grey brown, the bases more rusty brown. Hindwing upperside not darker at the base than in the middle, tawny-rust coloured, gradually becoming brown distally, but the brown border not sharply defined; lines not prominent. Hindwing underside inner area pale yellow at base.
Male genitalia: Uncus slightly dilated before apex, which is pointed. Gnathos flattened, thin, sides oblique before apex. Valve without stridulatory scales. Harpe elongate, straight, simple. Phallus with dentate process long, pointed, oblique in position, its base projecting distad, with no spines at or near base; cornutus obtuse, dentate on one edge.
