Taxonomic Notes:
Synonymized with Macroglossum proxima by Kirby, 1892, Synonymic Cat. Lepid. Heterocera 1: 630; then with Macroglossum corythus as a subspecies by Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 661. Reinstated as a species by Eitschberger, 2003, Neue ent. Nachr. 54: 153, 162. Synonymized with Macroglossum corythus corythus by Kitching and Rougerie et al., 2018, Biodivers. Data J. 6: e22236.
Eitschberger (2003: 162) reinstated Macroglossum luteata as a species separate from Macroglossum corythus only on the basis of the ductus bursae being spirally coiled and lacking a lateral triangular pocket. However, these features are simply the result of the ductus bursae having not yet been stretched during mating (the triangular pocket is caused by reflexing of one of the cornuti on the vesica) and consequently are not at all indicative of species status.
