Macroglossum milvus
Head and thorax uppersides with a darker mesial line. Mesothoracic tegula chestnut laterally in fresh specimens. Abdomen upperside with 4 orange lateral patches, of which the 1st is the smallest. Thorax underside clayish reddish cinnamon. Palp more grey, with a purer white side-stripe. Abdomen underside tawny. Both wings undersides bright tawny, with the inconspicuous distal borders a duller brown; the extreme bases more or less yellow, especially near the inner edge of the hindwing. Hindwing upperside bright tawny, without a dark border, the extreme base brownish black; yellow antemedial band ill-defined.
Male genitalia: Similar to Macroglossum aesalon, but the dentate process of the phallus more obtuse, and the broader cornutus wider apically.
Boisduval, 1875, in: Boisduval & Guenée, Hist. nat. Insectes (Spec. gén. Lépid. Hétérocères) 1: 337, stated that whereas Macroglossum milvus is common on La Réunion, it is very rare on Mauritius. Viette, 1992, Nouv. Revue Ent. (N.S.): 9: 219, suggested that Macroglossum milvus is only found on La Réunion. However, there appear to be specimens from Mauritius in NHMUK.
