HOLOTYPE ♀ Sierra Leone (Major Bainbridge) [BMNH].
Taxonomic Notes:
Treated by Hering, 1927, in Seitz (ed.), Die Gross-Schmett. Erde 14: 363, and Carcasson, 1968, Jl E. Afr. nat. Hist. Soc. natn. Mus. 26 (3): 46, as a subspecies of Libyoclanis karschi. Synonymized with Phylloxiphia goodii by Hayes, 1971, Bull. Brit. Mus. nat. Hist. (Ent.) 26: 232, as the female of that species. Synonymized with Phylloxiphia illustris by d'Abrera, 1987, Sphingidae Mundi: 78, who then gave the correct synonymy eleven lines later under the entry for Phylloxiphia karschi. This latter synonymy was overlooked by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.19. Resynonymized with Phylloxiphia goodii by Kitching & Cadiou, 2000, Hawkmoths of the world: 62. Reinstated as a species by Pierre, 2011, Bull. Soc. ent. Fr. 116: 68.
