First published by Boisduval in synonymy with Macroglossa divergens (which was a misidentification). Further down the same page, he simply stated that in his notes, he had described this species under the name prometheus. Thus, at this point, prometheus was merely a manuscript name and a nomen nudum. Macroglossum prometheus was only made available when Rothschild & Jordan, 1903, Novit. zool. 9 (suppl.): 621 (key), 651, treated it as the name of a species.
