Macroglossum vacillans
Terminal segment of antenna longer than the 3 subterminal segments together. Colour similar to Macroglossum affictitia, with the forewing nearer to Macroglossum gyrans, Abdomen upperside differing from both in that it has 4, not 3, cadmium-yellow lateral patches that are separated from each other by brownish-black basal patches, the 2nd and 3rd patches the larger; 7th tergite as in Macroglossum affictitia, without the extended white base of Macroglossum gyrans. Abdomen and wings undersides more brownish orange than in Macroglossum affictitia, the abdomen with vestiges of pale mesial patches, the side tuft of 4th segment buffish, not white. Forewing upperside with lines not prominent, the 2 antemedian ones almost straight, the first 2 discal ones much less curved than in Macroglossum gyrans. Forewing underside basal area, especially at the subcostal vein, shaded with yellow hair-scales. Hindwing upperside base and ill-defined distal border brown, the middle of the wing paler, especially between the apex of the discal cell and hind angle, where there is generally a distinct yellow tint (if not rubbed); in fresh specimens the whole median area is covered with yellow hair-scales. Hindwing underside inner area more extensively yellow than in Macroglossum gyrans. Uncus obtusely pointed, not dilated laterally before apex. Gnathos black distally, narrow, parallel-sided, the end rounded and somewhat thickened. Valve with stridulatory scales. Harpe short, acutely triangular, the ventral edge denticulate. Aedeagus with process ending in a long point, the distal edge with a few teeth centrally, the proximal edge dentate, at least in basal half, base projecting distad.
