Macroglossum vidua
Morphology:Similar to Macroglossum glaucoptera, small Macroglossum corythus luteata and Macroglossum sylvia. Recognisable by the dirty grey colour of the underside of the palpus; by the greyish, rather than yellow. of the bases of the wing undersides; and by the broad antemedian band of the forewing upperside. Head and thorax uppersides with no dark mesial stripe. Mesothoracic tegula darker brown posteriorly, without a sharply defined triangular patch. Abdomen with 3 small yellow lateral patches, the 2nd the darkest; tail dark, a black mesial patch at the base. Underside of palpus and middle of thorax dirty grey, the white scaling mixed with drab-brown scales, the sides darker. Abdomen underside grey. Forewing upperside antemedian band broad, dilated posteriorly, filled with black, deeper black at distal edge; median interspace greyish; discal lines indistinct, situated in an ill-defined broad, shadowy band; the area between this band and distal edge of wing faintly greyish, except for the costal area, which is brown; no distinct subapical spots; no grey postdiscal costal patch. Both wings undersides dark walnut-brown, dull, becoming somewhat olive distally, without a distinct brown border; the bases faintly greyish. Hindwing upperside yellow band interrupted, reduced, ill-defined. Hindwing underside yellow anal area restricted, sharply defined. Forewing length 22 mm.
