Manduca barnesi (Taxonomy)
Queried as a synonym of Manduca scutata by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 26. Transferred to Manduca as a species by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 32. Erroneously treated as a synonym of Manduca scutata by Bridges, 1993, Cat. Fam. Gen. Spec. Sphingidae of the World: VIII.15. Reinstated as a species by Carcasson & Heppner, 1996, Atlas Neotrop. Lepid.4B: 51.
Similar to Manduca franciscae and even closer to Manduca florestan, but longer winged than the latter. Forewing upperside ground colour white, with no green tinge, unlike Manduca florestan; no discal spot; markings generally faint, without the darker, semicircular, median area seen on the costal margin of Manduca florestan, absent; without discal dark streaks of Manduca florestan. Forewing underside unicolorous brown; marginal black band very narrow, slightly undulate between the veins; fringe white, brown at the veins. Hindwing upperside black, suffused with white toward the anal angle; apical line much less curved basad between the apex and vein Rs4 than it is in either Manduca florestan and Manduca franciscae; fringe white, black at the veins. Hindwing underside brown, with basal third heavily suffused with white; discal/post-discal area with two broad whitish bands with indistinct margins more-or-less parallel to distal margin. 60 mm.
