Manduca franciscae (Taxonomy)
Transferred to Manduca by d'Abrera, [1987], Sphingidae Mundi: 30.
Whiter than any other Manduca with the exception of M. sexta leucoptera; at first sight pattern appears faded but this is due to the generally pale coloration. Abdominal yellow lateral spots absent. Forewing upperside markings very similar to, but much lighter than, Manduca florestan, with no greenish tint; pale brown discal patch present in some specimens (as in Manduca florestan); two dark streaks between M3 and CuA1, and CuA1 and CuA2, less distinct and sometimes vestigial. Forewing underside light brown, shading to white. Hindwing upperside brown rather than the black of Manduca florestan; same pattern as Manduca florestan but white area at anal angle more extended. Hindwing underside white, except for light brown antemedian and submarginal bands, which are sometimes vestigial. 42-47 mm, thus smaller than Manduca florestan (55-60 mm). Female distinctly darker and more contrastingly patterned than the male, much more closely similar to Manduca florestan than is the male. 55 mm, thus smaller than Manduca florestan (55-70 mm).
